Konmari method is a Japanese art of decluttering and organizing home founded by Marie Kondo. The rule of this method is very simple: only keep the items that spark joy, that bring you joy when you touch it.
Keep only those things that speak to your heart. Then take the plunge and discard all the rest. -Marie Kondo
How to declutter a room? Marie's recommendation is to start with all of clothes, then books, then paper, then miscellaneous items, and finally mementos.
I started of course with my clothes. First thing I had to do was to put all of my clothes on the floor. I touched them one by one and tried to decide whether they spark joy or not. It wasn't easy at first, but then I got used to it and it went well. After the decluttering process had been finished, I hung blouses, blazer and hoodies. Then I folded Tees, trousers, shorts, and other remaining items into rectangle shapes so they could stand on their own. It's important to make them that way in order to save space. I use some boxes to organize my clothes because I don't have any drawers.
The same rule applies to decluttering the books. You put your books on the floor, touch them one by one, and keep only the books that you love, that spark joy. I was a bit nervous when it came to the books. I didn't want to throw my books away😣 However, slowly but surely I could finish it well. I organized my books like this: textbooks and reference books, fiction and nonfiction books, K-pop albums (YEAH!), and magazines.
Honestly I say, it was harder for me to purge paper than books. WHY DID I KEEP A LOT OF PAPER??? I did purged paper but I'm not satisfied with the result. I think, I will downsize "my paper collection" again.
Miscellaneous items was not a big problem. I keep pens, pencils, scissors, paper clips, stapler, etc. in my drawers. I use small boxes to organize them. For other items such as electronics and basic skincare products, I use medium boxes and put them on the standing shelf.
Organizing mementos was just a piece of cake. I don't have a lot of mementos, so I could finish this step quickly.
What I learn and get from Konmari method:
- Organize by category rather than by location..................... or maybe also rather than by size. I used to organized my books based on its size and it was more complicated.
- Get rid of I-might-need-it-someday thought. I must remind myself over and over of this.
- My drawer used to be a place where the disaster began because everything I didn't need or I-might-need-it-someday was in my drawers. It is now much much much better than before. I can find items I need easier and faster.
- I can keep my desk tidy more than two weeks! It's a new record! Yeah, I mean it! I have a writing desk with storage. In the old days I almost couldn't see the surface of the table. It was covered by a lot of paper and books and clothes and many things.
- I used to be lazy to put everything back to its place, to clean my desk and to organize it, but now I can hardly stand it when everything is here and there in my room. I put them back to their place as soon as possible.
However, there're some things Marie suggests that I can't do. First, the order of the clothes: going from the darkest and heaviest items on the left to lighter in color and material items on the right. It doesn't match perfectly with my cupboard, but I got as close as I could. Second, personifying objects and thanking the clothes for doing good job. She does it for a good purpose, but I don't do that. Thing I've learned from her way personifying objects is that I must take care of what I have and be grateful because I have them. Third, emptying bag every day. NOOOOOO😱 I can't do that😣
Overall, Konmari method works for me. I'm not a neat freak. My room was a mess for years. After I put Konmari method into practice, my room looks much better now. That makes me happier!
